Meet Brett...

Krewe du Who: Why do you cosplay, or what do you like the most about it?
Brett Powers: Halloween and Mardi Gras have always been my two favorite holidays, mostly because they were times for costuming.  Today, I don't confine my costuming to those two holidays.  John Mangus once said, "why buy an action figure when you can be an action figure."  My co-captain in Chewbacchus, Ryan Ballard likes to say, "Why watch a parade, when you can be a parade." Those two sentiments pretty much sum it up for me.

KdW: How many costumes do you presently own?
BP: I think I have about 20 or so.  I credit my friend Tim Stodard with starting me down the serious costuming road.  Also Jason Vecoli - they both gave me lots of help in getting my first few 501st costumes together.

KdW: What makes a costume one that you want to recreate?
BP: For Chewbacchus, it's usually a variation on my Ghetto Fett persona.  This year I will be debuting Boba Trek - a mash up costume.  For Halloween, it's usually something out of the ordinary.  Last year I went as one of Stalin's Super Ape Men.  I'm also proud of my Templar, from a historical standpoint.

KdW: Do you belong to any costuming groups?
BP: I'm one of the OVerlords in the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus, a member of the 501st Legion (TD 7298) and the Rebel Legion, and I parade with Krewe du Vieux.

KdW: Do you attend any of the larger cons such as Dragon*Con in Atlanta?
BP: I've been to Wizard World Chicago, Celebration in Orlando and Wizard World New Orleans.

KdW: What was the best experience you've had in costume?
BP: The two best experiences were both in my Sandtrooper costume while trooping with the 501st.  One was at Children's Hospital in New Orleans during Mardi Gras and the other was at Boo at the Zoo at Audubon Zoo.  At the Zoo, at little kid came up to me while I was in costume and hugged me.  That's pretty cool.

KdW: While in costume have you met the original actor that you're playing tribute to? If so, what was his or her response?
BP: No such luck.  However, I have hung out with Peter Mayhew while dressed as Nacho Fett.  That's pretty hard to beat.

About DOCTOR WHO...

KdW: What do you like the most about Doctor Who?
BP: I grew up watching Tom Baker on WYES as a kid in New Orleans.  I felt like it was something special since most people didn't watch it or even know that the show existed.  To this day, I like the show because it speaks it's own language unlike other Sci Fi programs that fall in line with the mainstream.

KdW: Have you been involved with Krewe du Who before?
BP: My friend Jason Vecoli saw Paul Patecek at the first New Orleans Wizard World and ran over to me and said, "There is this dude over there with a Saints K-9!  You gotta get him to join Chewbacchus."  The rest is history.
